I want the students in our library to have the opportunity to flex their thinking and creation skills! Imagine what they could create given a range of supplies and inspiration to create using math, science, books, and informational reading!
My students are Kinder-5th graders who are inventive and creative!
They are eager young learners who love to be hands on. Our school has a very diverse population, and bringing so may cultures together allows our students to learn a great deal from each other.
Kids love creating and inventing! I want to give them materials and ideas to do just that! The materials I am requesting through this project are mostly things like glues, tapes, scissors, craft sticks, construction paper, and other things that kids can use to create and invent.
Imagine kids using math and hands on materials to answer this: A UFO lands in your yard. You need to build a fence around it. Build a model of your yard, UFO, and fence. Use math to show all the correct measurements for perimeter 7 area. Or this: You get to help design and build a new neighborhood pool. Using the resources from our maker space, create model of the pool and determine all the measurements for the model including volume. Or this: We just read the book Balloons Over Broadway about the famous Macy's Day Puppeteer. Design and create your own puppet and include all the measurements for the various parts.
When students are researching inventors and learning about different subjects, I want to provide our classroom teachers with a space stocked with resources they can use to help their students learn in a hands on environment
A maker space is a place for kids to learn through creation.
In an age where collaboration is a skill set kids must have, designing & creating together is the ultimate challenge to developing this skill set!
