A day in my classroom is always an adventure. It is a melting pot of learning styles from struggling learners to the highly gifted. We are a Title l school that is overwhelmed with meeting the academic and personal daily needs within our community. My students come from a rural area and low socioeconomic backgrounds, though they come to school ready and eager to learn.
I teach a large number of students who need access to enrichment opportunities beyond what our county is able to provide.
One of my goals is to increase their reading proficiency to help them succeed in school and in life. In turn, I hope to provide learning experiences that will develop a passion for learning beyond the classroom. In our room, we use a mixture of flexible grouping to promote academic success in reading skills and mathematical thinking.
My Project
My students are seven and eight years old. Most have learned to read when they come to me, so it's my job to put books in their hands that will help them fall in love with reading.
Unfortunately, much of the reading instruction that is required is very boring!
How can they fall in love with content that is so unexciting?
The solution is that I purchased a fabulous new reading curriculum called Rooted in Reading that focuses all skills around a picture book each week. I have worked hard all summer preparing the resources in the program. I need the requested books, like Stellaluna, Crankenstein, I Need My Monster, and How to Catch Santa to implement our exciting new reading program. I can't wait to get started and witness the joy these stories bring to my students!
