My Students
My students are 6th graders from Irvine, California. We are at a school that is striving to provided leveled reading instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
Students will apply deeper reading strategies with novels at their independent reading levels.
By providing students with appropriate leveled novels, they will have better access to the texts and will be able to successfully apply strategies learned in class.
As soon to be middle-schoolers, these students are excited to make inferences about characters, identify theme and various points of view, and compare and contrast different genres to become better readers and critical thinkers.
My Project
"Children of the Fire," "Jim Ugly," and "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" are historical fiction novels at different reading levels. I will be using them for book clubs with my students. They will apply strategies learned in mini-lessons with these novels so that they can demonstrate understanding of deeper level reading strategies at their appropriate levels. For example, after teaching a lesson about positive and negative character traits with a sixth-grade level text, students who are below grade level will be able to use the same strategy with novels that may be below grade level. They can still get practice this way.
