Mr. Hew from Bronx NY is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Rated Mature: College Level Texts Needed For High Schoolers

My students need 40+ college-level novels and plays for their AP English Literature and Composition class.

My Students

"Welcome to AP English Literature and Composition. This year, you will be reading ___________." This was the first thought that came to my mind when I first found out I was to teach this class. I am supposed to teach these students college level reading and writing, but with what books?

On the first day of school, I will have twenty Seniors in my AP Literature Class.

These students are a few months away from entering colleges and universities across the country. The students sitting in front of me are determined to succeed and are eager to get a head start in college. They all attend a low-income charter school in the South Bronx that serves Black and Latino students. Our school has a 100% acceptance rate for all of the students who graduate and leave for college. Despite this, many of these may not have all the tools they need to make their dreams an actuality. Looking at all the research, the amount of practice that a student has reading is directly correlated to how well they will do in college and in their prospective careers. What's even more harrowing is that when many inner city students make it into college, scores of them drop out after the first year because they weren't fully prepared and lack the necessary skills in reading and writing.

My Project

My students need the tools and resources to get them into the best academic institutions. Unfortunately, many of my students are unable build on their reading skills because they cannot afford the latest bestselling novels or many of the all-time classics. Due to budget cuts, our school is not able to restore many of the classroom libraries that have been depleted over the years. Thus, we need your help to set these students up so that they can hit the ground running when they begin reading college level texts and writing college level papers as freshmen. With college-level books, students will learn to critically think and analyze a text. We will hold deep and thought provoking discussions as we break down each authors' craft. Using what we learned from each text, we will craft sophisticated essays in which students argue well-developed and specific thesis statements.

All of these students are driven and full of talent.

They simply lack the opportunities to practice reading and writing critically. They need to be challenged and intellectually stimulated. With your help, we can prove that these students are as brilliant and dedicated as I believe them to be. These students not only deserve to be in college, but we must guarantee them every opportunity to succeed. Help make this happen!
