Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited about science. They are all girls, 14 and 15 years old, and most of them live in the Bronx in NYC. Many of them will be the first generation of their family to go to college. They are inquisitive, hardworking, tenacious, and smart.
Since I teach a science class, there is a lab component. It's my students' favorite aspect of the class. Lab is especially important in earth science. Our topics are densely boring when discussed in class because students cannot easily relate distant galaxies or layers of the earth to their life. However, if students are given a hands-on activity about that same material then it becomes engaging and memorable.
Unfortunately, our school is new and growing. We are currently without any sort of science lab and share a classroom with a math class. Despite these obstacles, my girls are determined to create a science lab comparable to any other school in the city because they deserve the same science experience as anyone else, whether our lab is ready or not.
Dissection is one of those events that, if you went through, you remember. You may not recall your teacher's name, who you sat next to, or what grade you got, but if you dissected something in school then that is an experience that you can look back on for the rest of your life.
Even without a laboratory, science teachers attempt to make class engaging - there are some things that the students do not get to experience. I don't want them to miss out on the chance to dissect an animal. It should be the right of every curious high school student to be able to see firsthand how the body systems are interconnected and miraculous.
Not only will these supplies give my current students the memory of a lifetime - they will be reused for years so that other students can have that same experience.
In Their Own Words
With this dissection project, I would like to learn more about the animal's anatomy. Also, because the rat is a mammal our insides are similar, so I will be able to learn about human anatomy too. In addition to learning, a science dissection allows for me to have a new and unforgettable experience.
I will make the most of this leadership opportunity by making sure everyone involved in the dissection gains something from it and make sure that they look back at this amazing opportunity when presented with new things in their future. This project will help me get better at working with other people and it will also prepare me for my chosen career (forensic science).
This project is very important to me and my school community because it will open many new opportunities for us in the coming future. Since our school is new it is our job to build the basis of what it will be in later years for other students, so by having this project it will give us that first step to achieving this. It is important that we do this dissection now so that every student has a chance to learn.
