This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching 13-year-olds to read literature is difficult when they have a vocabulary equivalent to a 2nd grade student. 95% of my students live in poverty. They don't have books at home, and most of the time they don't like the books at school.

I don't know when my students were left so far behind, but a third of my 8th grade students read at the 2nd grade level. I cannot teach these students books written at an 8th grade level, but I promise you that 13-year-olds does NOT want to read 2nd grade books. I have found a fabulous graphic novel series -- Jeff Smith's Bone series -- that is the right level of reading, but is still of high interest for those big 8th grade students. Books like these are called Hi-Lo books-- high interest, low level. These books are immensely popular but are also hard to get a hold of. If I had four class sets of these books, I could have different reading groups reading each book at a time and we wouldn't have the long line of people waiting for the next book (like I do now).

I have requested four copies of each Bone book by Jeff Smith. We will keep these in the classroom so that students will always have the opportunity to read them here, and none of my Hi-Lo readers will have to suffer with boring books that aren't at their reading level.

I've worked with middle school students for four years, and I've never seen a series with the immediate grab and power that Bone has over students of this age. It is a literary story with lush illustrations and a complex plot. Its characters are real and compelling. I'm lucky to have a student finish one or two books in the year, and I want the entire series to be available to all students so that they can read all 9 books. Please help us buy these wonderful books for my lovely classrooms, full of potential readers.
