My Students
Eight am every week day morning I stand at my door and greet my sixth grade students as they come into first hour for math. Some are happy to be there; some are not. Some are happy to be away from the chaos of an unstable home life for a few hours; others would rather be home sleeping, playing video games, or reading.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Some come from "traditional" 2 parent homes, some split time between parents, some live with one parent, some have parents in jail, some even live with their grandparents. In the end they are your typical middle school students who are full of energy, emotion, opinions and enthusiasm (or lack of enthusiasm) that you would expect from middle school students.
Yes, sometimes they drive me a little crazy. They are middle school kids and I have learned to love each one of them for their uniqueness and what they bring to the table on any given day. At the end of the day I am charged with getting math content into their growing minds. Some students are easy to reach, some need a little more work.
My Project
As I'm sitting here in professional development learning about Raspberry Pi and all they have to offer my STEM classes. I am energized about bringing these materials to my students. I am in the process of developing projects and activities for my students to do to apply their coding and problem solving skills. Raspberry Pis will allow my students a hands on way to apply the coding and problem solving skills they are learning.
I have requested two Raspberry Pi starter kits.
These kits will allow my students different options of items to use in their creations and projects. The LED lights will be for a bigger project. Once my students become familiar with coding, Raspberrry Pi, and creating circuits I want them to create a light a house using the materials.
I am excited to bring these materials to my class and am looking forward to seeing what my students can create with these materials.
