I teach a fabulous group of students who are inspiring, motivating and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8, high poverty school, in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn, are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters or extended family living.
My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including Special Education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project
I am a member of our school's Climate Committee. We would like to host Sterlen Barr for 2 assemblies as a musical, motivational event prior to state standardized testing in April 2020. It was a huge success last year and the students are begging for a repeat performance. We can't all fit in the auditorium at the same time, so we are requesting multiple assemblies.
Rapping About Prevention puts on an interactive and audience participatory performance using music, role-playing, drama, games, and story.
They provide their own sound equipment and the necessary items for the show. The children will get language development, science, theater, and hands-on learning from role models. The performers are very engaging and appeal to children of all ages. The show we will experience will serve as a motivational kickoff to our state standardized tests. It addresses many issues including focus, diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism.
The children will learn many strategies through math, science, technology, music and art to use in testing situations along with bullying situations. The students will learn to be better upstanders, not bystanders. The students would never forget this exciting experience and it will help strengthen our positive school learning environment.
