My Students

Do you remember the first time you got caught up in a really captivating book? It probably made you feel as if you yourself were living out the story. That's the type of experience I am hoping to give my English Language Arts students! I teach 7th grade students in a rural town in North Carolina. Some of my students are reluctant readers, which they often attribute to the fact that they haven't found a book that interests them. With that in mind, I have selected a gripping adventure story that could inspire a lifetime love for reading. I was in middle school when I first realized that reading can take you to new, exciting places... and I want that for my students, too!

My Project

The novel Downriver will teach my students about teamwork, responsibility, and self-respect, while also transporting them to the raging rapids of the Colorado River!

My goal is to show them that reading can take them on a true adventure!

Students will participate in Socratic Seminars to collectively discuss the characters, plot, and theme of the novel. They will investigate the challenging vocabulary in the book and complete many hands-on activities that will foster their deeper understanding of the text. Not only is the book an exciting read.. it also teaches important lessons in a relatable way. Your support would mean the world to us!
