Rapid Biotic Assessment

My Students

Our fifth grade students are connected to nature on a daily basis, which is one of the many benefits of living in a rural farming community in Western Massachusetts. Knowing this, we try to engage students in activities that will expand their knowledge of the bigger world that we live in.

Students are engaged in all aspects of learning via service learning, using reading, writing, thinking, and problem-solving to think about their local and global community with the help of our local community.

My Project

Students will visit three points on the local North River in Colrain, Massachusetts. At each location, students will collect samples from the bottom of the river, using 500 micron fishing nets. The collections get placed in trays, where objects and critters are sorted. Once the critters are sorted, students count and classify each type of critter based on the quality of water each needs to survive. This will tell us the health number for our river. Students will then compare the three different collection samples to see if the river is healthy in all locations, or if it is worse downstream from the factory.
