This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are at the beginning of their statistical career and are highly motivated to succeed. They know that an understanding of statistics is becoming more and more valuable.
They will learn the basics of probability and statistics through real world, hands on experiments and simulations in the South Bronx.
All of our students are African-American or Latino and nearly 100% receive free or reduced lunch. Even with the challenges they face, our students have grit and hope. The students in this project are taking either AP Statistics or Algebra 2.
The student in these classes are Sophomores and Juniors who, like all of their peers, are planning on going to college. Those in the Statistics course have committed to working hard to reach a passing score on the AP exam in May. They have already given up time in the summer to attend an AP Bootcamp so we can start the year off strong. Not only are my students showing that they will be able to be successful in the course, they are also showing character strengths that are an emphasis of the school.
My Project
Randomization is a challenging topic for children and adults, it is also a major part of the AP Statistics and Algebra 2 curricula. My students need to gain a solid understanding of randomization and probability through hands on application. They also need help developing notetaking skills that they will be able to carry with them as they move on to college. It is important that they see how to create organized notes that they are able to use to review and study.
These dice, cards, and coins will be a go to set of tools for my students to quickly and easily perform randomization procedures for experiments and simulations.
They will have numerous options and will need to choose which tool is most appropriate in the moment. They will also learn to use these tools in different ways depending on the task at hand.
The multicolored pens will allow us all to have beautiful organized notebooks. Students will designate a color for different aspects of their notes, definitions, examples, formulas, etc. As they are taking notes, they will need to actively engage with the material to decide what color to use and when it comes time to study, they will have a more organized system to refer back to!
