My students need a Kindness/Empathy themed library. The books will be shared school-wide as part of a Ripple Effect classroom project promoting a positive learning environment. The books will facilitate character education and responsive classrooms.

My Students

My first grade classroom is comprised of 20 amazing students between the ages of 5-7. The students in my classroom come from many different areas of Charleston County, as our school admission is lottery based. My students represent a typical heterogeneous classroom, where students of all walks of life share common interests and goals.

Our classroom theme is to "promote positivity through kind acts." We try our best to always be kind and empathic.

Our theme empowers us to look beyond the corners of our classroom and share our kindness campaign with others.

Our students would like to create a Kindness Library and share it with the entire school creating a kindness literacy ripple effect!

The kindness library will be organized and maintained by the students in my classroom, and made available to all of the primary classrooms as shared resources.

My Project

Students will develop increased empathy, compassion, and pro-social behavior by reading and discussing books from the Kindness Campaign reading list. Titles from our reading list include; "What Does It Mean to Be Kind," "How Full is Your Bucket?," and "You, Me, and Empathy."

In addition to developing character, students will expand their ability to concentrate, while acquiring new reading skills, such as, vocabulary/language acquisition, increased fluency and strengthening their comprehension.

Furthermore, the students will be engaged in an exciting school wide campaign in promoting Kindness/Empathy by sharing their library with the school. Each classroom in the school will absolutely benefit from the books in this grant!
