Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students refer to me as Mrs. D. This is my first full year teaching as a CTE Business Teacher at our high school in Guilford County, NC. In the Career and Technical Education Department at my school, we strive to bring modern technology to the classroom.

Unfortunately, that technology experience stops once our students leave my classroom.

More than 3/4 of the students at my school are from low-income or single-parent households and do not have computers at home. My students are therefore unable to complete computer driven assignments at home.

My students thrive on technology! They're always interested in the latest and newest technology. Formats, layouts and discussing new business ideas is their language of choice.

My Project

My long-term goal is to raise funding for 24 laptop computers only available for student homework/project checkout. I teach Microsoft Word/PowerPoint and Principles of Business and Finance. My students have assigned projects that involve inserting graphics and formatting pages that are only accessible via computer. Due to many of students not having access to computers at home, they cannot complete homework assignments. Our media center at school is not always open to students after school hours.

These laptops would make a huge difference in student participation and increase their learning abilities.

The computers would be available to students for after-school checkout.

These tools will help guide my students into the new century of computer technology.
