Ramping Up Tiny Readers

My Students

My students are wonderful, bright-eyed children who are ecstatic to be in school for the first time. Due to the pandemic, many of them missed out on the chance to attend preschool. With that said, there is a lot of social-emotional learning that is happening alongside their academics this year. I am the third teacher these students have had this year. Partaking in collaborative learning with manipulatives is how these students learn best. These materials would help immensely.

We are a full-day kindergarten class at a Title I school.

Most of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. The student population is 33% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 11% African American, and 28% other.

My Project

The pandemic has been extremely difficult on students this year and continues to be. One way I find that I can connect well with my students is through literature. Students love to experience and learn through different authors and illustrators and the unique characters and situations that are in diverse literature. My coworker and I recently found a new reading program that we would like to expose our students to that has a wide variety of both fiction and nonfiction texts. The worksheets, crafts, and anchor chart materials are what we do have but the actual books are what we are asking for. Students getting exposure to both fiction and nonfiction helps them make better and deeper connections with the material that they're being exposed to. Getting these books would help us to bring more diversity into the classroom, which is always a good thing.
