My students are an amazing group of third-graders who come to school eager and ready to learn, despite the struggles that many of them are facing at home.
The majority of the students at our school live in poverty and sometimes just finding a way to get to school can be a challenge.
It is so important that they attend school regularly, and I try to do everything I can to make their experiences at school as positive and enriching as possible. My students deserve the best!
My Project
Over the past year, our school district has been providing all teachers with training to help improve our students' writing skills. My students and I love the new techniques that we have been working on, but there are certain supplies that are required to help students stay engaged. While these supplies were provided initially, they do not last forever and we are in need of new supplies for the new year.
This year each student will create their own writing notebook, with a strong focus on the organization.
The binders requested in this project will allow each student in my class to have a safe place to keep their writing samples. By using dividers in the binders, students will be able to separate their work by topic, type of graphic organizer, style of writing, etc. The highlighters requested are an absolute necessity.
Students learn, starting in kindergarten, that green signifies the topic, yellow is used for main ideas, and pink/red is for details. The colors correlate with a traffic light, to remind students to slow down and add more details to their writing. The highlighters, along with the pencils, pens and sticky notes used to create graphic organizers, will be stored safely within the zipper pouches in each binder.
