My students need 50 fiction picture books, such as "Honk! The Story of a Prima Swanerina," "Thank You, Mr.Falker" and "Babushka's Doll," so they can listen to quality literature daily.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The first two hours of each day is spent on Reading Workshop. Within Reading Workshop students listen to me read aloud, read-to-self after a mini-lesson, and write about their reading using their own leveled books. Reading aloud is recognized as the single most important activity in Literacy.
I have 29 3rd grade students in my classroom this year.
My students are a very energetic bunch who are strong in reading. Their levels range from C to V. Even though the students come from a poverty stricken neighborhood, most of the them are reading at or above grade level. They are learning to take learning into their own hands this year. For a majority of the reading block time students are working in books at their own levels so, read aloud time is when we all enjoy a great text together. Following a great text that was read aloud, is always a fantastic discussion. We are continuing to build their strength in speaking loud and clear to create a more lengthy and meaningful discussion of our read aloud.
My Project
The great literature that I chose for this grant is going to add a variety to my read aloud choices throughout the year. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success. Reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills; it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory. Our read aloud time is one of my favorites of the day because I get to see and hear my students thinking and talking about texts. Our discussions that follow our read alouds are amazing to say the least. Of course, we need a little more practice speaking loud and clear to make our discussions longer and stronger but we are getting there with lots of practice. Students will learn how to be life long readers who love to read.
Many of the students at our school enter the first day without seeing any printed form of literature.
It is my job to gather my family and friends and ask for your help in helping me build my read aloud collection. I am really trying to gain a range of read aloud books that will engage all my listeners. My goal is to have students start discussing these books after each read aloud. Reading aloud is the foundation for literacy development. It is the most important activity for reading success.
