Sir Ken Robinson compares the role of a teacher to that of a gardener. “Gardeners know that they don’t make plants grow… Plants grow themselves. The job of the gardener is to create the best conditions for that to happen.” I want to create an environment in our Art Studio that offers each child at Tinc the opportunity to to grow as an artist. One of the most valuable skills today is the ability to think creatively while generating ideas and solving problems. My goal is for every child to leave our art studio knowing that they are creative.
In our class, we practice Choice-based art-making where students develop their own ideas for their art projects and choose the which art supplies they will use.
This format supports multiple modes of learning, promotes differentiation, encourages student responsibility, problem solving, and self-reflection. Most importantly, it engages students in subjects and art media that target their individual goals. Students are taught to use a wide variety of materials to create at a variety of studios including drawing, painting, paper arts, sculpture, architecture, digital art, and clay.
My Project
The student artists in my classroom absolutely LOVE clay. We recently acquired a raku kiln and taking this workshop will teach me the knowledge I require to properly fire my students' work using this firing process.
This is a totally hands-on process that requires student engagement throughout the firing process.
Children will learn how to properly create ceramics to be bisque fired, then glaze techniques for raku firing, and how to properly unload the kiln to achieve oxidation techniques that result in marvelous colors on their pots depending on the natural materials that they select to be burned in the reduction process.
