Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are avid readers from the South Bronx. Growing up in the same neighborhood, I knew my only escape was through books. My students seek high-interest books to continue to evolve their love of reading. They find excitement when they dive into a chapter book that they're able to read. Every day they enter the classroom ready to search for their new adventure across the pages.
These third graders yearn to find books that are as diverse as they are.
They request books that have characters that are as intriguing and can easily become a friend.
My Project
It will give inner city kids access to books that they wouldn't otherwise have access to. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
We will have great read alouds with characters that my students are able to relate to, compare and contrast their lives and how they deal with situations.
My library does not have a large collection of books, so I would like to have books that will hold their interests and keep them reading in my classroom. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
