Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We want our spirit back! Our school used to have a spirit organization called the Rowdy Crew. My students this year have decided to restart the Crew. I am teaching a wonderful group of juniors and seniors this year. They have noticed a drop in the amount of school spirit since they were freshmen and want to revive a tradition that stopped a few years ago. The Rowdy Crew is a group that makes signs and shirts to support the teams on our campus. They also go to the games and cheer on all the players. This is important because 67% of our population is economically disadvantaged and will need sports scholarships to pay for college.
My students this year have been looking back at old yearbooks from five, ten, and twenty years ago. They keep seeing pictures of the Rowdy Crew. When they asked me what it was I had to ask the veterans on campus. Once we found out the history, the kids decided they want to restart the old tradition. The school was happy to have the Crew back but the club has no supplies. We need to make signs for our teams and t-shirts for the crew. We want to boost the spirits of the other students. We have 40 great kids so far and want to improve attendance at the games by getting even more kids fired up.
My students want to make signs for football, volleyball, and tennis right now. Later we will need signs for soccer and basketball. We also have a great band and choir, and an award winning academic decathlon team. Paper paint and poster boards would really help us show support for these great kids. The more colorful and dynamic we can be, the better our teams will do. We also want to make t-shirts for the Crew so we can let everyone know who we are and what we're about. The least expensive way to do this is iron-ons. The kids have some great ideas for designs. We just need the materials to print on. Hopefully this will give our teams the boost they need to win more scholarships.
