Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help keep students loving school and "reading time"! This will be my second year with 12 of the most wonderful special needs students in the world. As they have already devoured many of the books in my classroom library, I need some new high interest books for the fall!
My students are 12 of the most wonderful and determined children in the world.
Though they are in a highly restrictive special needs setting, with various emotional and mental disabilities, they strive to achieve the same outcome as their general ed counterparts. This will be my second year with these wonderful students and they deserve to have books that both interest and challenge them.
At the beginning of last year these students were unable to read silently for more than two minutes. As the year progressed, their reading levels increased. Through stamina and growth charts they were able to track their progress and enjoy their successes.
These students attend an inner city public school in NY where everyone is eligible for free lunch. Many of their parents don't have the means and opportunity to buy them books that interest them.
My Project
The books included in this project are a range of various levels and touch upon many different interest points. Due to the fact that this is my second year with these students, I have the advantage of knowing for a fact that these books are of high interest.
As a result of some of their disabilities, many of these students have a hard time staying focused. These high interest books will not only help them improve their attention span, but also help them realize that reading can be entertaining, informative and just all around fun.
I know that with the right resources, the books in this project, their attention spans, reading levels and love of reading will continue to grow in the upcoming year.
This will make their lives richer and their understanding of the importance of reading more profound.
