Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need to be readers by the end of the year. My biggest challenge is providing them with multiple text, fiction and non-fiction throughout the entire year. I also need to have many text in order to create take home reading bags, so the students can practice at home too.
My 23 students are bright, eager to learn and love school.
When they enter my classroom in the inner city I want them to feel invited, safe and willing to learn. My school is in the inner city, but is filled with many great families who want the best for their child and I feel it is my job to provide that for their child.
My Project
The materials I requested will be used to support reading instruction and practice.
The leveled sight word readers will be used during independent reading time and during small group reading instruction. It is important that when students are learning sight words that they are not just learning them in isolation, but are reading them in text. The sight word leveled readers will allow the students to do that. Also the non-fiction sight word books will expose the students to more non-fiction text, which is a new initiative with the common core curriculum.
The leveled readers will be used during small group reading instruction, but they will also be used to create book bags for each student that is on their level. The book bags will be used during independent reading time, but also the students will be able to take these bags home and practice reading at home. Many of my students do not have books and these materials will allow the students to be able to practice at home.
The donations will allow me to provide my students with many different texts throughout the entire year.
The leveled sight word readers will allow me to provide my students with leveled texts, while also allowing them to read the sight words they are learning in context. The leveled readers will allow me to provide multiple texts during small group instruction that fit the needs of each group. The leveled books will also allow me to create leveled book bags to take home and use in class.
