Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th and 8th Grade English Language Arts, with a wonderful, eager, and engaged group of children. Every child in my classroom wants to learn and succeed, and I encourage them to work hard, share their thinking, and push themselves to grow at every opportunity. While some students are still working their way through their first chapter book, others are zooming through my library.

My students are a diverse group of creative, enthusiastic, and inquisitive inner-city children who range from struggling readers, getting started with chapter books, to high-level readers who are grade-levels ahead.

Our curriculum focuses on using high-interest reading, and as much of it as possible, to help our students grow as readers, critical thinkers, and individuals. We believe that the best way to improve literacy is for children to read, read, and read some more, with teachers who can support their thinking as is it develops and blossoms.

Unfortunately, our schools budget is unable to provide the number and variety of books that we need to help our students thrive. At our middle school, we prioritize creating an environment where we can build literacy for all, support struggling learners, and help gifted students grow.

My Project

To raise readers, we need to provide students with ample opportunity to read a variety of materials to keep them coming back for more. Books are more than just the promise of a brief adventure. They are the promise of a better and brighter future.

Unfortunately, my school budget has no room to buy books for our kids, many of whom have no access to books outside of the classroom and read well below grade level.

These books will provide a robust and exciting library to draw kids in and feed their minds so they can continue to grow as readers and thinkers.

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I read to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
