I am an Early Childhood Family Education Teacher (ECFE). ECFE is a program that offers parents and children from birth to Pre-K the opportunity to grow and learn together.
ECFE is a program that's available to everyone in the community, regardless of their income or inability to pay for classes. Many of the students in my classes are from low-income families who do not have the resources to expose them to a variety of learning opportunities. These children will need these literacy and social skills in order to be successful in school and life.
Each day our principal ends the morning announcements with, "Don't forget to read, read, read!" We try everyday to demonstrate the importance of reading to the children. The children learn a great deal through shared and modeled reading times. They begin to understand written language when they have a teacher read aloud to them. They are able to further experiment with language sounds when they sing songs, read along, and use story props. These early experiences with spoken and written language set the stage for children to become successful readers and writers.
I have noticed that when my students are actively engaged in a story they retain more learning and are more excited to read new books. I am asking for these story kits with props that we can use as a whole group activity during our storytime or a parent and child can use them individually.
I am asking for the storykits for It Looks Like Spilt Milk, The Jacket I Wear In The Snow, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, and The Three Bears, among others.
These story and song kits will allow my students to use oral language, retell and dramatize stories, work on their listening comprehension, use new vocabulary, work together and learn about rhyming.
Your help will allow my students to become hands-on active learners while reading a story. They will feel empowered by helping to tell the story and will be able to learn new literacy skills. You will help instill in them a lifelong love of reading!
