Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Think you can, work hard, get smart." My students strive to live by this motto every day.
My 3rd graders are engaged and motivated learners who thrive when given the opportunity to experience new literature and ideas.
Despite the fact that they come from a low-income community where violence is prevalent and resources are low, they love coming to school and learning. Many of my students are English language learners who need additional support to succeed. When these students are given the chance to learn new things about the world, they show so much enthusiasm and have an increased love for school. Their reactions and connections to quality writing remind me just how deeply good literature can affect a child.
My Project
"The Most Beautiful Place in the World" by Ann Cameron is a sad and sweet tale about Juan, a 7-year old boy growing up in Guatemala. The novel has many themes my students can relate to. Around 70% of my students are Latino, and have come from or been to areas that share similarities with Juan's small, impoverished village. Many will be able to identify with Juan as he is sent from one family member to another, yet still has to manage his daily life. My students will also empathize with how much Juan wants to get an education, and how strong he is in the midst of difficulties.
Through this novel as well as the other high-interest books I've requested, my students will see that they can all read, understand, and enjoy books! The post-its will help to engage my students as they respond to different comprehension questions. The shelving is essential for our book corner; currently, our books are in cardboard boxes which makes it difficult for them to find books for their reading level.
My students are enthusiastic and hard-working children who deserve the plentiful resources that children in higher-income areas have.
Help us to close the achievement gap by giving my students a chance to develop an even greater love for learning.
