My students need books that support literary and content development in science and social studies, and shelving and seating to promote a warm, organized, and flexible learning environment.
My students come from a variety of ethno-cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Each one is an eager learner who brings experiences, strengths, and personal goals that add to the diversity and character of our classroom community; but there's more.
When my students walk into class each day, my hope is that each one would feel that he or she is a valued and growing member of our "team".
My students will not only learn to recognize and value what each person can offer but will continue to refine and add to those experiences, strengths, and goals. They will learn to struggle and succeed, both as individuals and team players. They will practice reflection and know that both mistakes and achievements are a part of growing. As the teacher, I control only a tiny fraction of what my students will become. Each day, they will teach and learn from each other more than they will from me--and that will be an incredible thing to see.
My Project
The books in this project were selected to align with the science and social studies content covered in second-grade standards. These high-interest books will introduce concepts, vocabulary, and historical figures. They will engage students through their colorful and detailed illustrations.
While experiential and interactive learning are important modes of education, learning through literature is just as essential.
These books will supplement and increase students' prior knowledge about scientific and historical subjects, which are important for any learner to become informed citizens and develop skills of analysis and inquiry. In addition to the books, my students will benefit from having more organized library space from the 20-piece, metal cube shelving, as well as opportunities for flexible seating from the 10 stacking stools, which can double as seating at our small group reading table which will help conserve classroom space.
