Help me give my students books for book clubs! I have the curriculum for our Reader's Workshop unit on Social Issues, but my students need sets of books to read in their book clubs.
First-generation students often struggle to find their place. Students from India, China, Korea, and Europe walk through my door every day, and often feel the pressures from parental expectations and growing up in an "American" school. Many of my students' parents left their home country to give their children the best education possible. The tremendous pressure my students feel to live up to their parents' expectations can be difficult.
My students tell me that the pressures they feel fall away when they walk into my classroom.
My number one goal as a teacher is to make sure that all students feel welcomed, cared about, and capable of learning and growing.
Students realize that they matter and can use their talents and voice to impact the world and create a sphere of influence. They are our future, after all! As a teacher to this community, meeting the students' needs will empower them.
My Project
Students need to read more to become better readers. I tell students that their classmates are their best teachers! When reading a book together with classmates in a book club setting, these conversations are like sparks that allow students to share their ideas, give them food for thought, and allow students to think deeply.
In book clubs, students learn alongside their classmates, allowing them to listen and learn from one another.
With a social issue book club, they learn about what is going on in the world, make connections to the text, are given a place to develop empathy, and to share their thinking. Thinking is challenged and listening skills are developed.
The books have been carefully chosen and are grade-level appropriate. Additionally, the books represent a variety of cultures and voices.
