Non-fiction writing tells about real things, people, and facts. Children can experience the wonder of the real world through non-fiction. Facts come alive when writing about animals, people, or objects are read to children. A study from the National Center of Education Statistics found that students who read storybooks, magazines and nonfiction score higher than those who exclusively read storybooks or magazines. So, our school literacy team decided to focus more on non-fiction writing in the classroom. Our students are more interested in the subject matter. The student's inquisitive nature has taken over their learning. Our district has now decided that this change is working. The district has asked that all schools create a non-fiction focus in the classroom. Not only do I want to create a non-fiction based classroom, I want to teach with cross curricular magazines. All I need are the magazine subscriptions. Unfortunately most of my students and myself are unable to cover the cost of all the magazines. I want to use Scholastic News and Time for Kids weekly in my classroom. I used Scholastic News for the past two years and it has current events, opinion columns, geography practice, vocabulary building, a weekly graph and more. Scholastic News is cross curricular because it has Reading, English, Math, History and Science content every week. Time for Kids is also cross curricular. This weekly news magazine motivates kids to read; builds reading and writing skills; and is easily integrated across the curriculum into social studies, science and math. Please help me immerse my students in a nonfiction literate classroom environment.
