E.C. Reems is a K-8 charter school in East Oakland serving 350 students. We would like a sound system to use for a few worthy purposes.
Our school is in a disenfranchised neighborhood so we strive to inform the community in order to transform the community. We have used our voices to make change in many ways. For instance, our students exponentially increased the number of registered voters in our district by talking to our neighbors, registering them as voters and encouraging participation in the political process. We open up our doors to address the needs of our school and community. We offer services from adult literacy classes to free Thanksgiving turkey dinners to parenting classes and harm reduction therapy. Because we are so vocal in the community, we desire a way to raise our voices even further.
We believe in change and are extremely proactive in a rather neglected community. A sound system would allow us to speak out publicly on the issues that affect our school and community.
It would also allow us a means of creative expression. For instance, many of our students are very talented poets who have no avenue for public expression. This sound system will allow us to hold monthly poetry slams where students can come with their best work in hand to perform for the school and uplift the greater community with a message of hope and positivity.
Another important use for the sound system is that we gather each morning to recite the Kwanzaa principles. The principles remind us that we can build a strong sense of self-worth from being creative, living a purposeful life, and being kind and whole-hearted in service to our family and community. All 350 of our students gather outside each morning as a different child leads us in recitation of the principles and the pledge of allegiance.
The sound system represents so much to us because it literally gives us a louder voice to speak out in our community and to make our intentions known. The students and teachers at E.C. Reems put our hearts into our work and your gift will be a benefit to not only us, but the people in our neighborhood.
