Ms. S. from Bridgeport CT is requesting reading nooks, desks & storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a classroom seating area that accommodates our large class size so we can continue to learn together, comfortably and safely.

My students engage in learning in an urban, Title 1 school that serves almost 1000 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Most of our children come from low-income households and receive free breakfast, lunch and snack. Our classroom hosts twenty-nine energetic and resilient children from diverse backgrounds. Ten students in our class receive one or more specialized services including: Tier 3 interventions, special education services, and services for English language learners. Despite the challenges they face in and out of school, the students in our third-grade classroom have a zest for learning. They are excited to complete group work, practice skills in center activities and have engaging class meetings.
Furthermore, they are already thinking about high school and college and life as tomorrow’s teachers, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and parents; The future of the Earth, our tomorrow is in their hands.
My 29 amazing students love to silent read, partner read, practice math strategies in center activities and build academic skills using learning games. Many students in our classroom ask to sit on the floor closer to the SMART board so they can better see their assignments and take more accurate notes. While most students don't mind sitting on a cold floor to do it, I really wish they didn't have to but having already invested over $1000 as a first-year teacher, into building our library, buying supplies for every student and decorating; I was unable to purchase the perfect rug. As we are a PBIS school and a RULER community, my students love to use their feeling words and two feeling words they would like to use more often are comfortable and safe: having a classroom rug would assist in addressing that goal.
Having a nice and large rug is important because our classroom is not just a room with desks and supplies, it is our home for learning and every good home needs comfortable seating and a place to meet to discuss important topics.
A classroom rug that seats 30 will allow all the members of our classroom to sit together comfortably during classroom meetings and whole group instruction. It will decrease the risk of injury from falling out of chairs. It will help to preserve and protect all of our vocal chords as we will be able to have discourse at lower volumes because of the closer proximity. Most importantly, it will give students a warm, comfortable place to meet together to engage in various learning activities. I hope you will find it in your heart to partner with us in this effort to raise funds for a rug and improve on our home for learning!
