I teach physical education at Oakland Elementary School. Oakland is a small school serving only about 500 students PreK-5th. Over half of our students come from single family homes and about 68% of our students are free/reduced lunch. I have worked the last few years on teaching my students activities that they can use throughout their lifetime. Many of these games/activities the students have never been exposed to. Tennis is an excellent lifetime activity that many students never get the opportunity to learn. Over the last few years, I have been able to purchase about 1/2 of the rackets I need to properly teach the students tennis. I am in need of about 10 more rackets. With these rackets I would be able to, not only teach tennis, but also use the rackets in other games and lead-up activities for the younger students. All the students would benefit from these tennis rackets. Many area recreation departments have great tennis programs and are promoting the sport. If a child is exposed to an activity that he/she enjoys in school, he/she is more likely to take up the sport in an after school activity as well as later in life. That is my purpose. To teach students activities that they can play throughout their life to stay physically active.
