Just because it is raining outside during recess time doesn't mean the class can't have something fun and educational to do indoors, Right? Having a variety of "old-fashioned" and "new-school" games will keep their minds active on days when their bodies can't be.
My students are 8 and 9 year old girls and boys in the 3rd grade.
They attend an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program World School in NC. IB learners strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open minded, caring, risk takers, balanced and reflective. We are also a Title 1 school.
My Project
Since the school where I teach doesn't have a gym, the children must stay inside our classroom for recess time. Having a variety of board games will allow my students to choose something to entertain themselves, and build friendships in new ways with some of their classmates on days we have to stay inside for bad weather. Since there are different types of games requested, my students have a wide range of options to choose from, and most are educational too! Playing board games with classmates uses reading skills (directions on how to play the game) communication skills (making sure each player understands the rules and explaining to each other if necessary), teamwork (working together in pairs for those specific games) and sportsmanship (understanding not everyone can win).
When children look out the classroom window and see that it is raining/snowing, I don't want them to worry they are going to be bored during recess.
I want them to be excited because they have a variety of inside games to choose from and to play with their friends instead. Please help chase their rainy day blues away!
