Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special is their drive to learn! This year I have students who are in their first year of full English instruction. It's exciting to see their determination to learn in a language that is relatively new for them in terms of academics.
My students are from the first or second Mexican American generation, and they live in a 95% minority neighborhood.
Ninety-five percent of these students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is 95% low income and is located in the heart of a community that is changing drastically. The majority of our teachers are extremely hardworking and work extended hours in order for us to provide the best education to our students!
My Project
Every year I make a set of sight word cards for my students. The sight word cards have on one side the word and on the back a sentence. These sight word cards are used at home and at school to help my students learn how to read and spell these words. Once they master these words I give them the other level of sight words. These sight word cards play a huge role in helping my students increase their reading ability.
Sight words are a top priority in developing emerging and beginning readers.
Sight account for at least 75 % of the words in a text. For my students acquiring English these sight words play an important role in getting my students reading and understanding what they read. I use these words daily in centers, games and when needing support for spelling. Students love having their words in rings and clipping them to their school bags or seat sacks.Please help me continue to provide these types of essential resources for my students.
