Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Kindergarten classroom is decorated with a rainbow of colors, including a rainbow of students! We are a high-poverty, International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme School (IB PYP) that achieved the award of Magnet School of Excellence last year. We set our standards high for students and they try their hardest to rise to our expectations, no matter the hurdles they have overcome in their lives thus far.
Many of my students come from low income homes. We send home a supply list at the beginning of the school year already knowing many of them will not be able to contribute. I would love to request parents to supply us with the large crayons necessary for their small hands and paint to help make learning more exciting, but as a teacher to these students I know it is not possible for their parents. Also, our school is on a very limited and tight budget this year with art supplies and I cannot borrow as much from the art teacher as before because the supplies are her actual teaching supplies.
Many of my students that come to me have little or no prior skills in handwriting, meaning poor fine motor skills. The crayons they bring in break very easily and quickly, and do not allow them to learn a proper crayon holding grasp. The tips on the small crayons break very quickly and the color is not as bold as we need it to be in their beginning months of school.
My students also need paint for our classroom. We love to paint pictures to match our daily letter, holiday inspired items for gifts, trees to go along with the seasons, and anything else that paint can be incorporated into!
I love to enhance students learning by bringing color into as many things as we possibly can! If they go home with paint on them, then we know it was a great day in Kindergarten!
We use crayons and paint almost DAILY in our classroom to encourage creativity and make learning much more exciting and enjoyable by bringing in color and a new material to work with!
Your help with allow my students to enjoy learning through art and creativity with the most age and developmentally appropriate materials possible!!
