I am an early childhood special education teacher serving students from ages 2-5 with developmental disabilities.
My students are visual and hands-on learners.
Their disabilities may include speech and language delays, cognitive, physical impairments and/or autism. My students struggle with basic vocabulary, attention, turn taking, following directions, and fine motor skills, all leading to delays in kindergarten academic readiness. My goal is to increase these skills to promote success in their preschool classrooms and prepare them for kindergarten, in a fun and engaging way.
My Project
Our students are from homes that struggle economically. For many of our kiddos that means they are provided the basics of outdoor wear such as coats, hats and gloves, but not items for wet, rainy weather. Unfortunately, that means that when it's wet or rainy out, we don't get to go outside to play and exercise.
One of the BEST things about preschool education is that we get to go outside and explore the world around us, take part in outside games, play and breathe fresh air.
Having a set of waterproof boots for every child would ensure that even on rainy days our students will have access to the outdoors so they can run, play, exercise and expand their science explorations (and maybe even splash in a mud puddle or two!)
