Our classroom is a Special Education preschool classroom. We teach children 3-5 years old who are on the Autism spectrum as well as typically developing peers. Our focus is on social skills, communication, and language development.
It is amazing to hear a child sing, when 6 months ago they did not speak.
I have been so fortunate to be able to see how much growth children can make during their preschool years. To have a child come in on the first day clinging to his mom's leg, and then 2 months later they are pushing their mom out the door saying "OK bye!." This is one of the many reasons I love my job.
We are a safe and supportive environment for children with special needs so they can have a positive first school experience. For many of our children this is the first time they have been away from their parents. This can be challenging for any 3 year old, but especially difficult for a child with limited language, possible sensory issues, and all the other challenges that come with Autism. We work hard to make sure school is a safe and happy place for all our kids.
My Project
Life in the Pacific Northwest means dealing with rain, and lots of it. Kids need to get outside to run and play everyday even if it is raining. So many families don't have the resources to provide their kids with rain gear to have at school. This project would provide two special education preschool classrooms with ponchos and extra boots so we can go outside and stay dry!
As a Special Education classroom, we have kids with lots of sensory issues.
Dealing with wet clothes can be very traumatic for our kids on the spectrum. Please help us get gear to help us stay dry.
