Rain, Rain Don't Go Away! Indoor Recess Movement Play Today!
My students need physical fitness items to increase their gross motor development and optimize cognition ( the play tunnel, hop along balls, parachute, and balance beam ).
Hello! I am a preschool educator at a STEM Magnet School in an urban school district. I have the privilege of teaching 15 naturally curious four-year-old students who come from a variety of ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
My students are motivated learners and to support their motivation to learn, it is important that movement and physical fitness needs are met.
To that end, I am in need of incorporating indoor gross motor activities within the classroom during those rainy/snowy days when we are unable to utilize our outdoor playscape.
My Project
Hello! On those rainy and snowy preschool days, I was wondering how I could create an indoor activity area that would enable my energetic preschool children to move? What resources would I need to make that a reality?
We know four year-old children are active and need multiple opportunities throughout the day to foster gross motor development, which in turn will promote cognition, social and emotional development, and fine motor development.
The developmentally appropriate items I have selected include the play tunnel, hop along balls, parachute, and balance beam. They are a start in creating an interest center that addresses the above mentioned areas of child development, and the ideal of educating "the whole" child.
Additionally, the development of this indoor center is an opportunity to discuss with the students the importance of regular physical exercise in order to grow a healthy body and mind, for optimal thinking and learning!
