Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am proud to be the team leader at my school. This means the world to me as this was my elementary school. As their coach/leader, I can experience so many of the different learning environments.
Seeing so many of my students every morning with the eagerness to learn has shown me that this has been the best professional decision I have made in my career.
I know that this year will be one for the record books not only for all the students and teachers but for me as well because we will work together as a village to make magic once again this year.
Our school is located in a low-economic neighborhood where about 90% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many come from broken homes that have been separated because of their dream to come to the United States or because of natural disasters. Some of the students in my school suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language) and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed.
My Project
Being at the hub of the school, allows me to help with resources for all the of our students population. Flexible seating at the library is one of those resources that is in great need. In an attempt to make the environment in our media center a more up to date, appealing and comfy place to learn, my goal is to create flexible seating corner within our library.
My students and I dream of a common area where they could comfortably sit and visit when they have checked out their books.
Presently the library is being used for those rainy days when PE classes need to be held inside. Our media center furniture is not very student friendly. In fact tables and chairs are bulky and used more as conference areas.
It is my wish to create a comfy, common space where students could visit and engage in a multitude of physical activities. At this area the students would have access to existing computers where they can engage in a variety of STEM activities. The cozy couch would allow students to feel a sense of belonging and wanting to stay in the library. Working alongside our PE coaches, we have come up with this new area, where students will be encouraged to stay active and even create projects that will include physical activities. During those rainy days, coaches will be able to use flexible seating to encourage students to stay active while being inside.
