Podcasting is the latest technology craze, but it is a relatively simple and powerful tool. Podcasting makes use of a digital recording device, free software and a host website enabling anyone to create a radio program. Having recently attended a technology conference session on podcasting, I returned to school anxious to implement what I had learned. I am a media coordinator at our 9-12 high school, and I teach several classes in addition to my media responsibilities. I had my students experiment with podcasting. Unfortunately, our lack of digital recording equipment made the process cumbersome and difficult. We were forced to use additional software products just to convert files. Ultimately, we did finish one podcast on the use technology use in our schools. This served to whet my appetite and frustrate me simultaneously. I want my students to be able to go into the school, interview students, teachers, administrators, and community members on a topic and create a program. I want them to edit, organize and take pride in the production. In the process, they will learn a great deal about the topic, but the broadcast will ultimately affect a larger audience (the 1300 students at our school). Initially, this project will be used by students in the media classes (approximately 20), but as the program grows, I foresee other subject teachers using this technology for their classes. There is a great opportunity for growth In order for this plan to become a feasible and vital educational tool, we need digital voice recorders with USB functions that allow students to upload files and edit them. These devices are small and inexpensive in terms of technologies; however, our school has little money allocated for technology, and this is generally used to keep our heads above water, not to be on the cutting edge of technology integration. From my experience with podcasting, I have seen the possibilities. I am anxious for the students to have the chance to discover a topic, research it, communicate an idea, organize information and ultimately publish it as a completed audio program. The project touches on a medium in which students are innately interested. Their projects will not sit on a desk or drawer or be posted on a refrigerator; instead, they will be on the web and, with success, a part of the future educational process at our school.
