Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a resilient group of 8th graders in a 90%+ below the poverty rate school. Our primary focus is to create a sense of community and prepare them for high school while ensuring that they receive high quality instruction in crucial content areas. Approximately 75% of my students are English Language Learners, working to master both grade-level content as well as gain English proficiency. I work with many newcomers and am asking for support to help create the most comfortable, predictable and engaging learning environment that I can. I am inspired by my students' stories, commitment to family and community and pride in their culture and heritage. Please support us in opening the curiosity door to a lifetime of learning and achieving their wildest hopes and dreams.
My Project
Flexible seating will provide an opportunity for students to put their mental and emotional worries to rest as they focus on critical math content. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and with many newcomers to our country, students can often feel like the classroom doesn't reflect or respect their lived experiences, many of which may include traumatic or adverse life events.
Providing students with flexible seating will appeal to their base physical needs to ensure that every child can and will learn as we maximize our time in the classroom to close language and learning gaps.
As we learn about irrational numbers, functions, inequalities, radicals and parabolas, students will be able to wiggle, fidget and pedal their way to a deeper understanding of and success with academic material.
