Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our program come from 20 different countries, representing 10 different languages. Despite their differences, they manage to come together as a cohesive group of English language learners who continually push each other toward greater English language proficiency. Many of them are college-bound despite struggling with a new language and a new social environment. Those who are not college-bound have solid plans for vocational schooling.
In many ways, my students are just like any other high school students.
They are faced with the same social and academic challenges as their native English-speaking peers. Unfortunately, the language barriers and cultural differences my students often face pose unique challenges. Nonetheless, I've had the pleasure of watching my students defy the odds! They are all hard workers who dream of a better future for themselves and their families.
My Project
Although my projects are typically geared toward serving my ELL students, this project aims to serve the entire high school population. This project, which was the brainchild of one of our students, has three main goals: 1) increase participation in after school activities from under-represented populations of students, 2) encourage healthier lifestyle choices for students, 3) find more ecologically sustainable commuting methods.
A new bike rack will be the first concrete step our Titan community can take toward finding solutions for these deep-rooted challenges facing our school community.
Students who cannot participate in after school activities due to a lack of transportation that fits their needs will be able take advantage of the new bike rack for that purpose. Students seeking to improve their overall physical or mental health will have bicycling to school as an extra option for a healthier lifestyle. And, finally, environmentally conscientious students will be able to do their part to make our community less car dependent.
