I have been graced with a wonderful group of boys and girls that are eager to learn how to be responsible, respectful and reliable students. I have a group of third graders, with the majority reading significantly below grade level, and it is challenging, yet fantastic. I am looking forward to all of the learning we are going to encounter this school year.
The school I work at has all students qualifying for free/reduced price lunch in an inner city school.
The students come from low-income homes and parents face challenges that make it difficult to contribute to classroom needs.
My Project
We are starting something new in our classroom: Reading Centers! As you may or may not know, Reading Centers are leveled groups of students that rotate from 4-5 centers I have created in order to provide reading enrichment. As students rotate in groups, they are able to engage in different activities and focused reading instruction in smaller groups. This leads to greater engagement, which leads to learning!
Imagine heading over to the bookshelf, grabbing your favorite book and plopping down on your belly on a cozy gray rug.
It's right after lunch, and you are ready to wind down from the chaos of 90 plus students chatting away about their morning at school. You escape away as you dive into your favorite non-fiction story about a boy or girl just like you! I want to create this experience for my students, so won't you be a part?!
With your donation, we will update our classroom library so that students will have a variety of books to choose from in both genre and levels. With these books, students can read with partners, browse books for their book boxes, and complete assignments such as book reports and reading logs on a daily basis. The more students read, the better readers they will become, and what other way to become a better reader than to dive into a new, exciting book?
In light of the new law requiring students to be at level readers by the third grade, your donation is of utmost importance. Help us race to the top in reading by donating to create a dynamic, exciting, brand new classroom library!
