Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inquisitive, intelligent, and curious about the world around them. They impress me with their resilience and I am awed by their creativity. I teach in a low-income urban school district. My students are linguistically and ethnically diverse, yet they share a common desire to not be confined by their economic circumstances. I teach 9th-grade biology. I feel privileged to work with this age group because I am the first science teacher of their high school experience. I feel a special obligation to ensure that my students receive a rich science curriculum full of labs and opportunities to do scientific research.

Too often students are reading about science instead of doing science.

This is not because students lack the interest or desire to perform laboratory activities, rather, it is the result of limited classroom resources. I believe that to truly inspire the next generation of scientists we must cultivate the joy of wonder through experimentation.

My Project

I am always looking for new and exciting ways to inspire scientific wonder. Over the summer I worked with a researcher at Stanford University and together we designed a lab to help the students understand experimental design. The students will use colored LED lights and a light meter to observe how various colors of light affect the movement of a microscopic organism. The students will also use the light meter to measure how the light intensity is affected by distance. What I look forward to is watching the students create their own scientific questions then implement a lab to test their hypothesis.

Labs such as these enhance student engagement because it creates ownership in the scientific process.

The students are not just blindingly following a lab procedure developed by someone else. They will be coming up with their own questions and must create the experimental design to answer it. The quest for knowledge is real in my class and I feel the obligation to stoke the flames of curiosity.
