My Students

My school is a public charter school providing students (learners) in grades 6-8 a hands-on STEAM, aerospace focused and project-based curriculum. We are the first school in the nation to be located right at an airport in Englewood, Colorado. Our learners come from all over the Denver area, from Franktown to Aurora to Arvada and beyond. This diversity brings different perspectives to our classrooms. Some of our learners have been home-schooled and some are just looking for a different type of school and have found their home at CSA!

Our learners are creative thinkers and very excited about learning!

Our curriculum focuses on core academic competencies, in addition to key focus areas that will prepare learners for promising careers in aerospace and technology. I will be team teaching with the science teacher to provide this PE elective in addition to teaching Exploratory/STEAM.

My Project

IF you empower a woman in STEM, THEN she can change the world. (A motivating statement from the If/Then Collection)

IF you can see it, THEN you can be it.

Sometimes learners think that when something is hard to give up. Jordyn Castor was born blind and works for the Apple Accessibility team as a Software Engineer helping people who are blind learn to code using the Swift Playgrounds app. I will use the IF/THEN Collection and her story to model that as a minority (woman, blind, & young), Jordyn found something to help others with. Learners will become inventors, and explore ways to help others by designing and programing their Droid. They can compare the cost of robots to support humans and see which ones make the most sense, increasing their financial literacy. The UV light will help sanitize between uses, and the filter will help keep our air clean.

With Distance Learning, we can learn to code remotely. Then the Inventor Kits will be used to try out and modify the initial coding plan by using the Engineering Design Process. This will teach acceptance to other types of students, whether it is a minority status, medical condition or a different way someone learns. IF someone who is blind can code, THEN so can I!

Learners will have a choice of choosing Jordyn’s story or another story that they are interested in as a motivation behind their projects. By learning about others in STEM fields, learners can see themselves in the future with a huge world of possibilities available to them. I envision the IF/THEN Collection being a starting point for future project based ideas as well, the focus of our new school.
