Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very special in many ways. All of them range in ability and areas of talent. Every one of the children in my Special Day Class have wonderful ideas and unique ways of interacting with their environment and other people.
I teach a kindergarten, first, and second grade group of students in American Canyon, California. My students are diverse in their heritage and need to feel that they are an important part of their classroom, their home life, and their community.
Quilting projects are a perfect spring board for my students to get interested and be successful in their academic environment. They can express themselves through art, math, science, writing, history, and social skills. Their speech abilities can be shown both non-verbally as well as verbally, allowing them to feel comfortable and confident at any level of language acquisition.
Monthly quilting activities can provide easy access to curricular goals and standards, linking them together through a multi-sensory approach. You can feel and see a quilt as you work with it, as it takes shape. You can hear stories about it and link a quilt directly to your own life, your heritage, your hopes and your dreams!
The children can make ABC quilts, color patterned quilts, story quilts, vocabulary quilts, literary response quilts, and many more based on their curriculum, but on a level they can clearly understand. The students will feel a sense of pride in a completed project, and a sense of joy as others reward their work with praise and admiration.
In order to achieve great success in our quilting adventure, my class is requesting a set of children's picture books that relate to the subject of quilting. We will stitch together a strong bond: with one another, with our families, with our heritage, and with our future. Quilts can provide windows into the past, the present, and the future, enriching and empowering the lives of very special students and those who know and love them.
