Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with students who love to learn. Some have limited vocabulary and benefit from visual prompts. They are very active and need individualized attention to meet their needs.
They are kinesthetic learners who benefit from hands-on activities and love to create.
My students lack organizational skills and require a lot of help and prompting. My students are students with emotional/behavior disorders, and/or learning disabilities. The general education environment proves too demanding for my students.
I am lucky to have a small class. But, that comes with challenges of them being in different grades, fourth through eighth grades, and on different levels of learning. With the small class, I am able to learn their strengths and weaknesses, help prepare them for independence, and help them return to the general education classroom. We are located in a rural area in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Most children come from a low socioeconomic background.
My Project
With the second start of the semester here, we did a quick look of our materials. A lot of our materials are dried up, broken, used up, or unusable. We love incorporating the arts across our curriculum. In order to do that, we need some new art supplies. We are requesting materials to replace our used and broken ones. My students are very creative and we incorporate a lot of art in our projects for core classes. We are in need of markers, crayons, and colored pencils to help get us through the end of the year.
My students' creativity helps to showcase their strengths and what they have learned.
We complete interactive notebooks in Math and English, journals daily (which are created with a booklet stapler) in which the students create art work, and vocabulary where the students draw a picture portraying the word.
