Imagine walking into a room with 12 computers going at once and hearing all the cacophony of sound bouncing off the walls. Well, that's what it sounds like in my classroom. Some of my students can't even think with that much noise; therefore, their learning is hampered. Ear buds would solve that.
I have a 5th grade class of amazing students.
They are enthusiastic about learning; they love coming to school each day anxious to see what fantastic activities they will be doing and learning about. Our city is trying to get over the devastation of an EF5 tornado just a few months ago that destroyed one third of the city. Some of my students had families that lost all they had, but these kids come to school with determination to "seize the day." They strive to get all they can out of each day whether in the classroom or specials such as music, art, library, or physical education. They enjoy doing their research and projects on the computers. They work on Web Quests, Podcasts, and PowerPoint presentations to enhance their learning. They are a resilient and awesome group of 5th graders.
My Project
With 12 pairs of ear buds, my students will be able to enjoy using their computer to the fullest without hearing all the bells and whistles from 11 other computers. They will be able to concentrate on the the animal research they will be doing including the sounds the animals make while in the wild that they want to put into their PowerPoint's. They can add animation and sound to Web Quests that they will create as well as those Web Quests they will be assigned to do themselves. While working on podcasts or iMovies, they will not be disturbing the rest of the class when they fill these broadcasts with sound or music, but they will be able to hear it to know if it's the sound they are trying to develop. They will be learning how to use all the technology available on their computer to make public service announcements, brochures of different countries to visit, and many other exciting assignments.
These ear buds will make such a difference for my students because they will not be limited to what programs they can log into to research and just study.
Also, it will help my students who have a hard time with loud sounds to be able to concentrate on their own work better. There is a time and place in the classroom for noise, but sometimes too much noise is a disturbance that hinders learning.
