As a teacher in a low-income school with most students being English Language Learners and with many of them coming from refugee camps my students face many obstacles in the classroom and at home.
I teach in a Title I school in Maine where nearly 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students come to school everyday and thrive on the routine the school day provides and the love and acceptance from teachers and other staff members. Despite so many hurdles my kids are excited and eager to learn. I am trying to provide the most meaningful experiences which will help my students become life-long lovers of learning.
My Project
My students need a new set of headphones to replace our old, broken ones. My school is lucky enough to have lots of technology available to be used throughout the day, but we don't have the headphones to use on the iPad or computers during centers, while they are expected to be working quietly.
Since nearly all of my students come from low income families and many are from refugee camps, it is not feasible to ask them to send in headphones.
By having working headphones my students will be able to continue learning on their own level while they can't be working with a teacher. I have many students who are just learning English and by having headphones to use on the iPad and computers they can grow their English vocabulary and reading skills.
