The cost of bilingual pictures books and book sets, picture and color cards, and The Alphabet Game ELL, purchased from Kaplan Early Learning Company, is $275, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This is my third year teaching and I love it very much. Every year is a new, different and exciting experience.
This year I was given the first grade ESL class. The funny thing is that I did not recieve one item to work with the ESL children. I had purchased a few books over the summer when I went to visit the "Eric Carle Museum", but that's it! I don't even have an alphabet chart in Spanish.
Most of my students are of Latin origin. I have students from Mexico, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, and Santo Domingo. Some children just came to me a couple of weeks ago. It would be most helpful if I had materials the children can work with to better understand the English language; perhaps a few tapes with books, CDs for the computer, and books to look at with lots of pictures/words.
I work at a school in a low income area. Many of the children could barely afford regular school supplies, like notebooks, pencils, folders, etc. Some children live in a shelter. I would love to get the ESL program up and running in the classroom, but I need some materials to help them; perhaps even some take-home items so that the parents could help their children with work/activities. These items might include magnetic alphabet/wooden alphabet puzzles, Bilingual picture books, alphabet games, and English & Spanish Color cards, so that the children can practice letters, sounds and their first English words at home.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
