Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of mathematics backgrounds, and most of them are quite far behind where they should be according to the California state standards. As a middle school math teacher, I am responsible for catching students up so that they are ready to pass the high school exit exam in a few years. Madison Middle School is in a low-income area of Oakland, CA, with primarily African-American and Latino students. With a minimum of 29 students per class, it is difficult for me to check for understanding with every student every day, and wading through piles of classwork and homework gives me a lot of information after the fact.
I need a way to be able to tell, during class, whether my students understand a concept and also to give them time to practice. If each student has his or her own mini whiteboard and marker, I can ask questions quickly to the whole class and simply glance around the room to look at their responses. In an instant, I can tell whether students have understood the day's objective. At the same time, this activity engages all students' attention and provides for an effective break from the daily worksheets that seem to be an inevitable part of math classes. The fast-paced, competitive nature of the activity means that students will become excited about learning and practicing math, and therefore they will learn more in class.
For this project, I will need 40 mini whiteboards for students to use, as well as markers for each student as well. I will keep these materials as a class set and use them frequently to monitor students' progress and get them excited about learning math!
