Research in the library using index cards for notes: Check. Research with the school's computers: Check. Research with an iPad mini in the classroom: Priceless! Bonus: We will have easy access to numerous math websites that make practicing math feel like we are playing video games.
My sixth-grade students come from mixed socio-economic backgrounds.
Many families can provide monetary support; some must rely upon others to provide supplies. My students' abilities span the spectrum from highly gifted to special needs. Some receive outside support for their educational needs; others rely solely upon the classroom. They are kind, energetic, fun and enjoy diving into challenging assignments. Our large, urban middle-school strives to make students feel safe, welcome and significant. Students in one of our Small Learning Communities feel they are part of a group, with a specific focus. My students are in the Tech Academy. They learn many important skills in their Computer class. However, most of the equipment they can use outside of that class is outdated and in need of repair.
My Project
Students in our Tech Academy have a strong interest in technology. Many are gifted with their talents and some are learning skills for the first time. The equipment in our classroom (for math and science) is outdated. Most of the computers we have malfunction on a regular basis. With today's budget constraints, we are not able to update the equipment. When the students have the right equipment, what they can accomplish is amazing.
Having an iPad mini will excite and motivate them. With easy access to the web, they can get more research done for science projects. They can also quickly visit math websites to practice skills (which feels much more like playing a video game than when they put a pencil to paper).
Today's technology is like yesterday's toys.
My students are extremely motivated when they have an opportunity to work on a newer piece of technological equipment. Having an iPad mini will get them excited about researching projects and practicing math skills. It will give them an opportunity to make films and photo displays. It will give them a chance to practice on a contemporary format that will begin to prepare them for the job market.
